Simple People
By  j o n  c o d e r

Me and my invisible friend went across the street this morning
For breakfast, we ordered pancakes and eggs
We talked about a fallen world, we talk about life in general
And we talked, about our dear friendship
And he said you gotta remember we’re…

Simple people in complex world
With whose-its and whats-its and gadgets and gizmos
And thingamabobs
Simple people with a simple faith
That says…our God still cares

Me and my invisible friend went across the street to the supermarket
We saw an old lady there
She looked so sad he tired to talk to her
But she didn’t listen I guess in this world
You got to be seen to be heard

My invisible friend died on a cross two thousand years ago
So he could be here with me
He reminds me who I am he reminds me why I’m here
And he reminds me of a God’s unending love
He is there, he always cares

Simple people in the hands of a mighty God
Simple people bought with a price
Simple people he so deeply loves
And our God…Our God still cares

Well the story of “Simple People” is linked directly to “The Laundry Song”. I wrote “Simple People” one day while I was sitting in the laundry mat of my apartment complex. I just started messing around with the chords and once I had a rough idea of the music I started to write just silly words. I think the idea of Jesus being an imaginary friend came from the way we put him away when we want and pull him out when we need something. One of my favorite lines out of all my songs is at the end of the second verse when it says, “I guess you gotta be seen to get heard.” It frustrates me to no end that in this country we give any moron national TV time and people will watch but even after paying the price for sin, the Son of the most high God might get a couple hours a week from 20% of the population. I just don’t understand these simple people.
