Without
(The Phony Christians' Theme)

By  j o n  c o d e r

Lights go up the show time is near
Its finally time for my part to premier
I’ve mastered all my lines; I’ve mastered my part
The only thing not in it is my heart

Where is the love?
Where is the hope?
Where is a life inside this cruel joke?

I feel like a clown on center stage
Behind enough face paint I might conceal my rage
The crowd like to laugh I smile so wide
Little do they know of the pain that’s inside

Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?

So many faces I’ve hid behind
So many in fact I forget which is mine
If people would stay they’d see my frown
Then they’d know I true was the saddest clown

“Without” has the distinction of having the most titles of all the song I have ever written. It was “The Saddest Clown”, “Where Is The Love”, “Where Is”, “Without Jesus” and maybe a couple other names.

Anyway, I wrote “Without” after buying a couple Dan Electro pedals for my guitar.  I was trying them out and I got a really cool sound.  The phase pedal in a weird way made me think of a circus and that afternoon while just playing around I made up “Without”.

I got the title, "The Phony Christians' Theme", from the idea that there are a lot of "Christians" in our world who confess Christ with their mouths but not with their lives.

Its like they're putting on their own little circus show.  For them its all about saying the right thing or having the right face on.  Its sad to me because they can never know true joy until they find it in the love of Christ.  No matter how good you are at the show in the end its hollow.
