The Laundry Song

 HEAR IT HERE

Sun was shining when I got up today
I had no clean clothes
What can I say?
I rolled out of bed and put on any old thing
Went to the laundry mat
And I began to sing
And when I got there the Holy Spirit came to me
Opened my eyes, and I could see

I saw God in the spin cycle
I saw God in the rinse
Saw God in the dryer sheets
I saw God in the spin cycle
I saw God in the rinse
Saw God in the dryer sheets
I saw God everywhere
I saw God everywhere

Jumped with jubilation at the thought
My God is with me I’ll fear not
My excitement I could not hide
I jumped up and began to smile
Now some of you might think this song is wrong
And maybe I should not go on
You might even think this song’s a sin
But its no worse than TBN

Got to the dryer and I thought a lot
About how its so very hot
Yeah its hot but is it hot as hell
Well if it is I hope the devil’s there as well
Then as I thought a little more
Maybe the laundry’s not a strange place for the LORD
Cause my life was washed as white as snow
My life was washed as white as snow
The stains were taken off my heart
My life was washed as white as snow

I see God in the spin cycle
I see God in the rinse
See God in the dryer sheets
I see God in the spin cycle
I see God in the rinse
See God in the dryer sheets
God is everywhere
God is everywhere

The funniest thing about “The Laundry Song” was that it was never meant to be a song.  It started the evening after I wrote “Simple People”.  I had been sitting in my room finishing up “Simple People”, and then came out to the living room and told Brent, my roommate, that I had written a song while doing my laundry.  He jokingly asked if it was about my laundry and I told him yes and just made up whatever came to my head at the time.

We were both cracking up by the end of the song and I thought that would be it was, just a little roommate joke.  The next day I was with my good friend Lynne and I told her about “Simple People” and my little improv session.  I played her what I could remember of the then untitled laundry song.  She also found it very funny and told me I needed to finish it.

So about a week later I was working a demo CD and I recorded one take of my laundry song.  About a month later I played “The Laundry Song” at the Baptist Student Union and since then I have been "the guy who sings about his laundry and God."  I guess I could think of worse labels to bear. : )
